Uma Aventura

Last summer we went to Portugal to spend a couple of weeks.

While we were there, we browsed a Fnac shop and I instagramed a shot of the cover of a book. The book is part of a collection called "Uma Aventura" that is mainly oriented for the teenage audience — they were widely popular in my youth. When it was instagramed, my good friend Isolda Guedes commented with "Love it love it love it!".

The post with Isolda's comment

This got me thinking.

This collection of books marked a generation so... why not make a t-shirt collection.
The colour of the t-shirt is the same as the book covers.

The only reason why I want to watch "Diana"

Don't feel the need for neither "Naomi Watts" nor the for the stuff at the bottom... but hey... it's a film poster.

What a treat.

Going Android and back to iOs

I've been an iPhone user since 2007. I have also worked for Apple in two occasions:

  • In 2003, as an Apple Technician
  • In 2009, as an Apple Sales Specialist

I've qualified for the "Apple Fanboy" title since 2003 when I got my Dual 1.25Ghz G4 Powermac. After that came a 12" Powerbook, then the G5 (ohhh... the G5...), then the 15" Macbook Pro, then the 17" Macbook Pro (which was replaced under Apple Care for a Unibody 17") and then the 27" iMac.

In the phones department, I got the original iPhone, which was replaced by a 3GS, which was then replaced by a 4S.

And I am now eligible for a new phone as I was renewing the contract with my provider, and this got me thinking.

Do I really need an iPhone?

Well... No. I don't need an iPhone — nobody does. We just like to have it but... we don't "need" it. It does bother me though that the Androids get much larger real estate in terms of screen.

Does the iPhone still work for me?

Yes — It works fine for me. Although in my private practice I became Google Apps based, the iOs applications worked great. Gmail (I actually used Mailbox), google drive... all works great on iOs but I just wanted to try Android. As Orange provided me a choice of a free Sony XPERIA Z on the aforementioned contract extension, I took the opportunity to give it a bash.

The good

  • WOW— HAVE YOU SEEN THE SIZE OF THAT SCREEN!!! What the fuck are you doing Apple?!??!?! I need that screen.
  • Did I mention the screen size?
  • I like to have a phone that has a SD card where I can fit an extra 64 gigs of stuff.
  • I like the fact that I plug it onto my mac and I just have access to the whole file structure. This is great to move music and films around.
  • All the stuff I used on iOs, there's an Android equivalent.
  • Love the fact that the XPERIA is waterproof...
  • Screen size...

The bad

  • The overall lack of elegance of the operative system.
  • The fact that the screen is pretty much unusable outside unless it's on full brightness and consequently murdering your battery time.
  • Could not chose Helvetica as a system font (please spare me the comments on this)
  • Although I knew this AND it's not a complaint... it's more of a realisation... it's completely incompatible with iMessage.

The conclusion

I used Android for 4 months and I went back to iOs. The overall elegance of the OS and the way it just works with all the Apple ecosystem just makes me feel warm and cozy. Yes, dragging files back and forth is a pain to do through iTunes and I know that "there's an App for that" but I just love dragging and dropping — With iOs 8 and Yosemite this will be possible.

What really didn't work for me was the absolute lack of elegance of Android, the waste of real estate in silly stuff, the inconsistency in the type choice in the widgets and... well... just overall interface clumsiness.

Still love you Google!

About Kico

I can't really remember when was it that I met Kico. I know that it must have been somewhere around the cafeteria at Católica University... but I can't really precise when. I tend to forget.

I remember however that he had facial hair and a funky pony tail. The first time I saw the pony tail, it reminded me of the kind of pony tail Samurais have / had.

Anybody with a Samurai hair cut is a hero in my book.

The Samurai hair-do.

I also don't know if we instantly hit it off. I think we did. I think he might have find me a bit of a weirdo, though.
As he joined Católica a year later (or maybe two years later?) than me and I had flunked my second year at that fine institution, we were in the same class.

We became quite close not only due to both of our natural inclination to work long hours at night, music, games, films, food but also because we were part of the same two-person study group in a subject at Uni called "Interactive Interfaces".

When we were developing our "application", we kind of camped at my place. As my Father had recently moved out and Mum was "fragile", we had my flat to rock out awesomeness until 5AM. As Kico didn't drive (still doesn't) he would stay over.

He stayed over for a whole semester. And that was great.  He become much more than a friend. He became a brother. My brother.

Time went by, I left Católica to go to Newport to do my BA in Graphic Design (BA Graphics, it was called at the time) and in his final year, he was kinda enough to let me do the credits for his end-of-course production — a short comedy called "Corrida de Cão".

Kico a story-teller, but the side I prefer is his musical side. He's a very gifted musician as he can play pretty much anything with strings. He's one third of Turtle Giant and "When we were kids" is indeed one of my favourite songs. Ever. It's a joy to listen to it on repeat.

Mind you, Kico excels at everything he touches — photography (instagram feed), graphic design (the covers, posters he did and does for Turtle Giant are nothing short of breath taking), music (I did mention this) and film.

This post serves the purpose of paying him a proper homage.

Keep it up Kico, we love you man.

Empire of the Sun

Although it's not my approach, I have the outmost respect for the author of these covers. I love how they look and how well they represent EotS' musical universe.

Developing a strange obsession...

...for Chilly Gonzalez.

Never really paid much attention to Mr. Gonzalez. And I feel bad for that.  In an attempt to make up for lost time, I began listening to everything Chilly available on Spotify.

Although his collaboration with Leslie Feist was something I was aware of (and very much pleased my ears hour after hour after hour), I really don't know why I haven't dedicated Mr. Gonzalez my undivided attention.

I'm glad I did.

Currently hooked on the Knight Moves EP.  The original is quite nice but the Lone Remix is what it's all about for me.

Here's Mr. Gonzalez with another hero of mine, Tiga.

Gotta love the canadians...

Best. Script. Ever.

Have you ever had a shitty agency that does not want to provide you InDesign files and keeps referring to the contract your employer signed with them where "production ready PDFs" were the only thing they committed to?

Or shitty agencies that when they do find the time to send you the InDesign files, each of the pages has an EPS file there that you then need to edit individually (who the f*** works like this??!?!?!?)

Yeah. Me too.

Meet Convert PDF to Illustrator Artboards

And yes. It works with CS6.

Spread the love.

Formação Náutica Vieira Amândio redesign

before

after

Formação Náutica Vieira Amândio is a renowned institution in Portugal in the domain of providing people with their pilot's licences. With more than 7000 licensees through this school, the institution was looking at revamping their identity.

The idea behind this project was to update the visual identity to a more contemporary and international feel. As some of the students are coming from abroad, part of the brief stated the importance of geo-independence.

The body of work developed for FNVA includes manuals, t-shirts, desktop backgrounds (so that students get used to the names of the flags, pronunciation and morse code), flyers and overall premises look and feel.

On going project. More pictures here.
