I've been an iPhone user since 2007. I have also worked for Apple in two occasions:
- In 2003, as an Apple Technician
- In 2009, as an Apple Sales Specialist
I've qualified for the "Apple Fanboy" title since 2003 when I got my Dual 1.25Ghz G4 Powermac. After that came a 12" Powerbook, then the G5 (ohhh... the G5...), then the 15" Macbook Pro, then the 17" Macbook Pro (which was replaced under Apple Care for a Unibody 17") and then the 27" iMac.
In the phones department, I got the original iPhone, which was replaced by a 3GS, which was then replaced by a 4S.
And I am now eligible for a new phone as I was renewing the contract with my provider, and this got me thinking.
Do I really need an iPhone?
Well... No. I don't need an iPhone — nobody does. We just like to have it but... we don't "need" it. It does bother me though that the Androids get much larger real estate in terms of screen.
Does the iPhone still work for me?
Yes — It works fine for me. Although in my private practice I became Google Apps based, the iOs applications worked great. Gmail (I actually used Mailbox), google drive... all works great on iOs but I just wanted to try Android. As Orange provided me a choice of a free Sony XPERIA Z on the aforementioned contract extension, I took the opportunity to give it a bash.
The good
- WOW— HAVE YOU SEEN THE SIZE OF THAT SCREEN!!! What the fuck are you doing Apple?!??!?! I need that screen.
- Did I mention the screen size?
- I like to have a phone that has a SD card where I can fit an extra 64 gigs of stuff.
- I like the fact that I plug it onto my mac and I just have access to the whole file structure. This is great to move music and films around.
- All the stuff I used on iOs, there's an Android equivalent.
- Love the fact that the XPERIA is waterproof...
- Screen size...
The bad
- The overall lack of elegance of the operative system.
- The fact that the screen is pretty much unusable outside unless it's on full brightness and consequently murdering your battery time.
- Could not chose Helvetica as a system font (please spare me the comments on this)
- Although I knew this AND it's not a complaint... it's more of a realisation... it's completely incompatible with iMessage.
The conclusion
I used Android for 4 months and I went back to iOs. The overall elegance of the OS and the way it just works with all the Apple ecosystem just makes me feel warm and cozy. Yes, dragging files back and forth is a pain to do through iTunes and I know that "there's an App for that" but I just love dragging and dropping — With iOs 8 and Yosemite this will be possible.
What really didn't work for me was the absolute lack of elegance of Android, the waste of real estate in silly stuff, the inconsistency in the type choice in the widgets and... well... just overall interface clumsiness.
Still love you Google!
